Porcelain veneers are thin shells that are used to cover up imperfections. From chips to discoloration, they are an easy and quick way to improve the look of your beam. Veneers have come a long way to become the popular treatment that we are familiar with today. Continue reading to learn about the history of porcelain veneers as well as how they’ve changed over the years.
A Hollywood Smile
Veneers were invented by a dentist named Dr. Charles Pincus in 1928. They were meant to temporarily change the appearance of actors’ teeth while they shot movies. They were attached to the teeth using removable adhesive. Eventually, longer-lasting acrylic veneers started to be used. Acrylic veneers were easily damaged, so they had to be replaced regularly.
The Invention of Etching
Dr. Michael Buonocore invented a process called etching in 1959, which makes the teeth more porous so the veneers can better adhere. This is done by applying acid to the surface of the tooth.
In 1982, the Simonsen and Calamia research group invented a way to use etching for treatments like veneers. A putty-like bonding resin was applied to the teeth to seep into the grooves made by the acid. This made the bond stronger and let most patients keep their veneers for several years.
The Veneers of Today
Modern veneers still use etching and bonding techniques to attach them to patients’ teeth. They are made from higher-quality, stain-resistant porcelain. This material closely resembles healthy, natural teeth.
During the procedure, your dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel. This allows the veneer to fit snugly and seamlessly blend in with your smile. Impressions are taken of the teeth and sent to a dental lab for the veneers to be made. Additionally, you’ll be fitted with temporary veneers to protect your smile in the meantime. Your dentist will have you come back into their office when they get the veneers back so they can be attached.
